Cruise Gratuity Calculator

Real 2026 daily rates for every major cruise line, and a calculator for exactly what your trip will cost.

💵 Budget·8 min read·Published Aug 2026

Gratuities are one of the most-underestimated costs of a cruise — a family of four on a 7-night sailing can rack up $500-700 in automatic tips alone, on top of the advertised fare. Unlike a drink package, there's no way to opt out of the math: gratuities are charged per person, per day, to every guest in the cabin, for the length of the whole cruise. This calculator tells you exactly what to expect.

How Cruise Gratuities Actually Work

Charged automatically, daily

Gratuities post to your onboard account (your 'sea pass' or 'key card' folio) automatically, once per day, for the length of the cruise — you don't need to do anything for them to apply.

Per person, not per cabin

The daily rate applies to every guest in the cabin individually, including children. A family of four pays the rate four times over each day, not once per cabin.

Suites pay more

Every line charges a higher rate for its top cabin tier — the logic being that suite guests use more dedicated staff time (butlers, concierge, priority service).

It's how the crew gets paid

Gratuities are pooled and distributed among dining, stateroom, and other guest-facing crew — for many crew members, this pooled gratuity is the majority of their income, not a bonus on top of a full wage.

⚠ Can I Remove Gratuities?

Technically, yes — every major line lets you adjust or remove the automatic charge at Guest Services. In practice, this is strongly discouraged and considered poor etiquette outside of a genuine service problem, since the pooled gratuity is how much of the crew is actually paid. If you have a real complaint about service, raise it directly with Guest Services first — most issues get resolved without anyone needing to touch the gratuity charge at all.

💡 Prepay to Lock In the Rate

Most lines let you prepay gratuities when you book, which locks in the current rate even if it rises again before you sail — a real hedge given how often these rates have increased through 2026. Virgin Voyages is the clearest example: prepaying costs $2 less per person, per night than paying automatically once onboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much are cruise gratuities per day?
Standard-cabin gratuities run $16–$20 per person, per day across the major lines in 2026 — Disney is lowest at $16, Norwegian highest at $20. Suite and top-tier cabins pay more, ranging from $18/day up to Disney's $27.25/day for Concierge and suites.
Can I remove or reduce cruise gratuities?
Technically yes, at Guest Services — every major line allows guests to adjust or remove the automatic gratuity charge. In practice, cruise lines strongly discourage it, since gratuities are how the crew is paid, and doing so without a genuine service complaint is generally considered poor etiquette.
Are gratuities charged to kids too?
Yes. Gratuities are charged per person, per day, to every guest in the cabin regardless of age — a family of four pays the daily rate four times over, not just for the adults.
Are gratuities included in the cruise fare?
Usually not — on most mainstream lines, gratuities are billed separately to your onboard account. Some fare types bundle them in: Carnival's "Cheers!" bar tabs already include the service charge, Princess Plus/Premier bundles gratuities into the fare (see our drink package calculator), and Virgin Voyages' prepaid fare option includes gratuities up front. Always check what your specific fare includes before budgeting separately.
