Santorini

Iconic whitewashed villages, volcanic beaches, and sunsets that people fly across the world to see.

Overview

Santorini (officially Thira) is the rim of an ancient volcanic caldera in the Aegean Sea. The dramatic cliffs, blue-domed churches, and stunning sunsets make it one of the most photographed destinations on earth. Cruise ships anchor in the caldera and tender passengers ashore — note that Santorini can become extremely crowded with multiple ships in port.

Top Beaches

Red Beach

Dramatic red volcanic cliffs. 10 min walk from Ancient Akrotiri. Unique and stunning.

Perissa Beach

Black volcanic sand, long stretch, beach bars and restaurants. Good for a half-day.

Vlychada Beach

White pumice cliffs, far fewer crowds. More secluded and dramatic.

Must Eat

Tomatokeftedes

Santorini's famous tomato fritters — the local cherry tomatoes are intensely flavoured.

Fava

Creamy split pea purée — a Santorini specialty, served with capers and olive oil.

Fresh Grilled Octopus

Draped over a harbour-side railing to dry, then grilled — get it at any taverna in Ammoudi Bay.

💡 DIY Tip

ATV/quad hire ($30–50/day) is the best way to explore the island independently — roads are small and parking is impossible with a car. Head to Oia for the famous sunset but arrive 2 hours early to get a spot.

🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict

The caldera villages (Fira, Oia) are very walkable. Book a ship excursion for wine tours (visiting the volcanic wineries), sailing trips around the caldera, or if the tender queue is a concern — some ship excursions have priority tendering.
