Kotor
A perfectly preserved medieval city at the foot of dramatic mountains — one of the most beautiful bays in Europe.
Overview
Kotor sits at the end of a fjord-like bay surrounded by towering limestone mountains in Montenegro. The Old Town is a remarkably intact medieval city encircled by Venetian walls, with winding alleys, Romanesque churches, and cats everywhere (Kotor is famous for its cats). The bay itself is stunning — deep blue water flanked by sheer cliffs — and the views from the ancient fortress above the town are extraordinary.

Top Beaches
Plavi Horizonti (Lustica Peninsula)
30 min by taxi or ferry. Stunning pebble beach with clear blue water — one of the best in Montenegro.
Dobra Voda Beach
45 min south of Kotor. Long sandy beach — rare for the Montenegrin coast. Worth the trip.
Must Eat
Priganice
Montenegrin fried dough balls served with honey or cheese — the local breakfast. From any bakery in the Old Town.
Black Risotto
Squid-ink risotto — an Adriatic classic. Try Galion Restaurant overlooking the water.
Njeguški Pršut
Montenegrin cured ham from the highlands — drier and smokier than Italian prosciutto. Get it with local cheese.
💡 DIY Tip
Climb the fortress walls (1,350 steps to the top, ~45 min up, €8 entry). Go early morning before the heat and before other ships arrive. The views of the bay from the top are among the best in the Mediterranean.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Kotor Old Town is extremely walkable from the pier — skip any city tour. Consider a ship excursion for Budva beach day trips or for Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks island (which requires a boat).
