Kusadasi (Ephesus)
The Library of Celsus, one of the great ancient cities of the world — and all just 20 minutes from the pier.
Overview
Kusadasi is a busy Turkish Aegean port town whose chief attraction is nearby Ephesus — one of the largest and best-preserved ancient Roman cities ever excavated. Founded by the Greeks, refounded by Rome, and later home to a Christian community mentioned in the Bible, Ephesus at its peak had a population of 250,000. The Library of Celsus (2nd century AD), the Great Theatre (capacity ~25,000), and the marble-paved Sacred Way make it one of the most awe-inspiring ancient sites anywhere in the world. The Terrace Houses — wealthy private homes with intact mosaics and frescoes — require a separate ticket but are extraordinary. The Virgin Mary's House (Meryem Ana Evi) on a nearby hillside is also a major pilgrimage site.

Top Beaches
Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Denizi)
Kusadasi's most popular beach — 5 min by taxi, crowded in summer. Good facilities.
Long Beach (Uzun Plaj)
Quieter stretch of sand 3 km north of town. Clean water, fewer tourists.
Must Eat
Gözleme
Turkish flatbread pancake cooked on a griddle and stuffed with cheese, spinach, or minced meat. From street vendors near the port for €2–3.
Balık Ekmek
Grilled fish in a bread roll, eaten dockside. The freshest, simplest meal in Turkey.
Turkish Delight & Baklava
Kusadasi's Grand Bazaar is full of shops selling these — buy good lokum from a proper confectioner (avoid the powder-heavy tourist versions).
💡 DIY Tip
Take a dolmuş minibus from outside the cruise terminal (30 TRY, asks for 'Efes') or a taxi ($15–20) to Ephesus. Buy your ticket online in advance (~$30) to skip queues. Allow 2–3 hours at the main site; add 45 minutes if you pay for the Terrace Houses. Return independently — no need to book this through the ship.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Ephesus is straightforward to do independently by dolmuş or taxi. Consider a ship excursion if you want expert archaeological commentary (the history is dense and a good guide transforms the experience) or if you want to combine Ephesus with the Virgin Mary's House and Selçuk in one smooth loop.
