Athens (Piraeus)
The cradle of Western civilisation — the Acropolis, ancient Agora, and the best street food in Greece.
Overview
Piraeus is the port of Athens and one of the busiest cruise hubs in the Mediterranean. The Acropolis — crowned by the 2,500-year-old Parthenon — is one of the most iconic sights on earth and a mandatory stop. But Athens has much more to offer: the National Archaeological Museum, the lively Monastiraki flea market, and the atmospheric Plaka neighbourhood with its rooftop restaurants overlooking the ancient city.

A unique thermal lake carved into rock — warm mineral water, €10 entry. Surreal experience.
Must Eat
Souvlaki
Grilled pork or chicken skewers stuffed in pita with tomato, onion and tzatziki. Best from a street grill in Monastiraki for €2.50.
Spanakopita
Spinach and feta wrapped in crispy phyllo pastry. Buy a slice from any bakery — warm from the oven.
Loukoumades
Greek honey doughnuts — crispy outside, fluffy inside, drenched in honey and cinnamon. Try Loukoumades on Mitropoleos Street.
💡 DIY Tip
The Acropolis + Acropolis Museum combo (€30) can be done in a morning. Buy tickets online the day before — queues at the gate are brutal. Take the Metro back to Monastiraki for lunch and shopping. The Plaka neighbourhood has incredible rooftop views of the Parthenon.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Athens is very manageable by Metro independently. Book a ship excursion only for guided Acropolis tours (a good guide makes it 10x richer) or for Cape Sounion day trips. Skip bus city tours.
