Overview
Colón sits at the Caribbean (Atlantic) end of the Panama Canal and is the port most cruisers mean when an itinerary lists a 'Panama Canal' call — either a partial/full transit through the locks, or a call where passengers disembark to explore by land. The Agua Clara Locks visitor centre, a short drive away, offers close-up views of massive ships being raised and lowered between sea level and Gatun Lake. Many itineraries pair Colón with a transfer to Panama City (about 1.5 hours away) to see the Miraflores Locks, the historic Casco Viejo old town, and the canal from the Pacific side. Colón city itself is workaday and best treated as a transit point rather than a destination.

One of the clearer cases for booking a ship or reputable third-party excursion: transport logistics, lock-visit timing (ships transit on schedules), and language make an organised tour meaningfully easier here than most Caribbean stops. Full-canal-transit days aboard the ship itself need no excursion at all — the transit is the show.
