Overview
Sitka sits on the outer coast of Baranof Island facing the open Pacific, giving it a different character from the inside-passage ports of Juneau and Ketchikan — more exposed, historically distinct, and noticeably less crowded. It was the capital of Russian America until Alaska's 1867 transfer to the US, and that history is visible in St Michael's Cathedral's onion dome and the Russian Bishop's House. Sitka National Historical Park's Tlingit and Haida totem pole trail, the Alaska Raptor Center, and the Fortress of the Bear rescue sanctuary make it one of the easiest Alaska ports for a satisfying walk-off-the-ship day, since ships anchor and tender passengers to a compact, walkable downtown.
