Nieuw Amsterdam
“A Signature-class classic — timeless Dutch style sailing Alaska's Inside Passage and the winter Caribbean.”
Nieuw Amsterdam entered service in 2010 as the second of Holland America's two Signature-class ships, sister to Eurodam. Named for the Dutch settlement that became New York City, she carries a themed art collection worth more than $3 million celebrating that shared heritage, from Dutch Golden Age antiques to works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Richard Estes, anchored by an inverted-skyline sculpture in the atrium. At roughly 2,100 guests, she's noticeably more intimate than the newer Pinnacle-class ships, with the same Music Walk-style live venues and Culinary Council-designed dining. Nieuw Amsterdam sails Alaska's Inside Passage round-trip from Vancouver each summer, then repositions to Fort Lauderdale for Caribbean itineraries in winter — a solid choice for travellers who want classic HAL style on a smaller, more manageable ship.
