Funchal (Madeira)
Madeira's flower-draped capital — cable cars, wicker toboggans and seaside cliff walks.
Overview
Funchal is the capital of Madeira, a mountainous Portuguese island in the Atlantic that is a regular stop on Canary Islands, Western Mediterranean and transatlantic itineraries. The port sits right on the waterfront, a short walk from the old town (Zona Velha) with its painted doors, the Mercado dos Lavradores flower and fruit market, and the lower station of the cable car that rises to the hilltop village of Monte. The island is famous for its steep terrain, so most visitors take a cable car, a wicker toboggan ride or a drive to the high cliff viewpoints.

Top Beaches
Praia Formosa
Funchal's best-known pebble beach, a short taxi or bus ride west of the centre.
Lido Promenade
Not a beach, but a seafront complex of swimming pools and sun terraces popular with visitors and locals.
Must Eat
Espetada
Beef skewers grilled over laurel wood — Madeira's signature dish, served on a hanging metal hook at many restaurants.
Bolo do Caco
A round garlic-butter flatbread, usually eaten warm as a starter or with steak.
Poncha
A strong local drink of aguardente, honey and lemon juice, sold in bars throughout the old town.
💡 DIY Tip
Take the cable car from the Zona Velha up to Monte (about €16 one-way or €22 return in 2026, 15–20 minutes) and ride the wicker toboggan back down — buy a one-way ticket up if you plan to take the toboggan, which costs roughly €25–30 for one person and finishes at Livramento around halfway down. From there, a taxi or the walk down brings you back to the seafront.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Mixed — the cable car and toboggan are easy to do yourself, but a ship excursion saves time on the winding roads to Cabo Girão or the high mountain viewpoints, and Funchal's tight port times make a guaranteed return worthwhile.
