Istanbul
Two continents, a thousand years of mosques and bazaars — and a cruise terminal right on the Bosphorus.
Overview
Istanbul is one of the great cruise stops of the Mediterranean: a city that straddles Europe and Asia, with the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar all packed into the historic peninsula across the Golden Horn. Ships dock at Galataport in Karaköy, a modern waterfront terminal with shops and cafés, just below the Galata Tower. The sights themselves are a short tram or taxi ride away, so the real challenge is deciding how to use a single day (many itineraries overnight here, which helps a lot).

- Pier to Town
- Galataport is in Karaköy. The Galata Tower and the Karaköy neighbourhood are an easy walk, and the T1 tram from Karaköy stop takes about 10–15 minutes to reach Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque); a taxi takes about the same in light traffic. Walking all the way to Sultanahmet is roughly 4–5 km, so use the tram.
DIY Port Logistics: "From Pier to Town"
The first 30 minutes can make or break your port day. Use this quick plan to exit the terminal fast and avoid overpriced transport mistakes.
- Is it walkable?
- Usually walkable: Galataport is in Karaköy.
- Water taxi or cheap local shuttle?
- No fixed water taxi is guaranteed. Check the official port shuttle desk for low-cost local buses or shared shuttles before taking a private taxi.
- Expected taxi rate to the main beach
- Expect about €25 to reach the main beach zone; confirm if that is per person or per vehicle before boarding.
- Are ride-shares legally permitted at the pier?
- Ride-shares are inconsistent at cruise terminals. Pickup is often restricted inside secured pier zones, so plan to meet drivers at the public gate if app pickup is blocked.
Must Eat
Balık Ekmek
Grilled fish in a bread roll, sold from boats near the Galata Bridge — a classic cheap Istanbul lunch.
Turkish Breakfast Spread
If your ship docks early, a table of cheeses, olives, eggs, honey and fresh bread is a proper local start to the day.
Baklava & Turkish Coffee
Pick up fresh baklava from a dedicated pastry shop and finish with a small cup of strong Turkish coffee.
💡 DIY Tip
Take the T1 tram from Karaköy to Sultanahmet, see the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque first (queues are shortest early), then walk through the Grand Bazaar and cross back over the Galata Bridge to Karaköy and your ship. Foreign visitors pay for the Hagia Sophia (around €25 in 2026) and enter via the upper gallery; the Blue Mosque is free but closes around prayer times.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Worth it if you only have one day — traffic and queues are unpredictable, and a guide who can skip the lines and manage your time is genuinely useful. If you're overnight or comfortable with trams and a flexible plan, doing it yourself is easy and cheaper.
