Messina itself is one of the most walkable port calls in Sicily, with the cathedral and waterfront a ten-minute stroll from the pier — but most passengers use it as the launch point for Taormina's cliffside old town and Isola Bella beach, or a day trip up Mount Etna. All three are realistically doable in a single call, though not all three in one day.

Walk to Piazza Duomo yourself — it costs nothing and takes ten minutes. For Taormina, a local bus runs from near the port for a few euros each way and drops you close to Corso Umberto; check the return timetable carefully before you go so you're not cutting it close to all-aboard.
