Overview

Tangier sits at the northwestern tip of Africa, across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain, and is a popular first taste of Morocco on Western Mediterranean cruises. The medina's entrance is a short walk from the port, with the Kasbah and its museum higher up the hill. Beyond the city, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules are 13 and 19 km west of the port, and are the usual choices for a short drive.

Pier to Town
The entrance to the medina is a short 10–15 minute walk from the cruise terminal. The Kasbah is about 2.2 km away — a 30–35 minute uphill walk or a 5–8 minute taxi. Short taxi rides to the Kasbah or medina typically cost around 30–60 MAD; agree the fare before you get in.

DIY Port Logistics: "From Pier to Town"

The first 30 minutes can make or break your port day. Use this quick plan to exit the terminal fast and avoid overpriced transport mistakes.

Is it walkable?
Usually walkable: The entrance to the medina is a short 10–15 minute walk from the cruise terminal. The Kasbah is about 2.2 km away — a 30–35 minute uphill walk or a 5–8 minute taxi. Short taxi rides to the Kasbah or medina typically cost around 30–60 MAD; agree the fare before you get in.
Water taxi or cheap local shuttle?
A local shuttle or bus option is usually available and often cheaper than a private taxi from the pier.
Expected taxi rate to the main beach
Expect a short licensed taxi ride to Tangier City Beach; agree the fare before departure because cruise-day pricing can vary.
Are ride-shares legally permitted at the pier?
Ride-shares are inconsistent at cruise terminals. Pickup is often restricted inside secured pier zones, so plan to meet drivers at the public gate if app pickup is blocked.

Top Beaches

Tangier City Beach

A long sandy beach curving around the bay from the port, with cafés and a busy local scene — more of a promenade than a swimming spot for most visitors.

Achakar Beach

A wide, wild Atlantic beach near the Caves of Hercules, often visited as part of a Cap Spartel tour.

Must Eat

Moroccan Mint Tea

Sweet green tea with fresh mint, served everywhere and especially good at hilltop cafés overlooking the strait.

Tagine

Slow-cooked stew of meat or vegetables in a conical clay pot, usually with preserved lemon and olives.

Couscous

Steamed semolina with vegetables and meat, traditionally served on Fridays.

💡 DIY Tip

Walk to the medina, then take a taxi up to the Kasbah to see its museum and the views across the strait. Carry small dirham notes, politely refuse unofficial guides, and agree taxi fares in advance. If you want Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules, a taxi round trip typically costs around 120–200 MAD each way — fix the price and the waiting time before you set off.

🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict

Worth considering if it's your first visit to Morocco — a guide helps with the medina's tight lanes, bargaining and hustlers. If you're comfortable negotiating, a short walk through the medina and Kasbah is easy to do on your own.
