Toulon (Provence)
A working naval harbour with a cable car to the summit — and a handy base for Cassis, Aix and Provence.
Overview
Toulon is France's main Mediterranean naval base and a gateway to Provence. The town itself has a lively old-town market and the Mont Faron cable car, which climbs to a summit with views over the bay in about six minutes. Most cruise passengers use it as a launchpad for Cassis, Aix-en-Provence or Bandol wines. Toulon is a separate port from Marseille, about an hour's drive away.

💡 DIY Tip
For Cassis, take the train from Toulon — trains run roughly hourly, take about 35 minutes, and cost about €7 one-way in 2026 — and walk down to the harbour or take a calanques boat trip. For something closer, ride the Mont Faron cable car, then browse the old-town market. Aix-en-Provence is possible by bus (about 1h20) but only runs every couple of hours, so it's riskier on your own.
🚢 Ship Excursion Verdict
Skip it for Cassis and Mont Faron — both are easy to do yourself. Book an excursion for Aix-en-Provence or the Marseille combos if you want to be sure of getting back.
