Norwegian Gem entered service in 2007 as the third of NCL's Jewel-class ships, and nearly two decades later she remains one of the line's best-value sailings. Rather than staying put, Gem crosses the Atlantic every year — winters are spent on short Caribbean and Bahamas runs out of Tampa, summers on Mediterranean itineraries from Ravenna and Rome. At 93,530 gross tons and carrying just under 2,400 guests, she's noticeably smaller and more intimate than NCL's newer Prima and Breakaway-class ships, with an old-school cruise-ship layout, Freestyle dining across 15 restaurants and bars, and none of the queues that come with a 5,000-passenger megaship.

✦ The standout feature

Gem is one of only a handful of large ships that genuinely repositions across the Atlantic every year, giving guests two completely different cruise experiences — Caribbean and Mediterranean — on the same hull within a single 12-month period.

  • Mediterranean first-timers on a budget
  • Couples who want adult-only pool space (Spice H2O)
✗ Not the right fit for

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Norwegian Gem a good value ship?
Yes — Gem is consistently one of NCL's cheapest sailings per night, thanks to her age and smaller size relative to the fleet's newer ships. You get the same Freestyle dining, The Haven suite complex, and Spice H2O adult deck as newer ships, just on a more compact, easier-to-navigate hull.
What's the difference between Gem's Caribbean and Mediterranean seasons?
In winter, Gem sails short 4–7 night Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean itineraries from Tampa. In summer she repositions to Europe for 7-night Mediterranean sailings between Ravenna and Rome, visiting Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece. Onboard experience stays the same — only the ports change.
Does Norwegian Gem have The Haven?
Yes. The Haven by Norwegian is a ship-within-a-ship suite complex with its own pool, restaurant, lounge, and 24-hour butler and concierge service. It's smaller than The Haven on newer ships but delivers the same private, upgraded experience at a lower price point.
What is the food like on Norwegian Gem?
Solid and varied for a mid-size ship: Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro, Moderno Churrascaria, Teppanyaki, and La Cucina cover the major specialty cuisines, backed by a 24-hour O'Sheehan's and the Garden Café buffet. Freestyle Cruising means no fixed dining times or assigned tables.
