About Viking Ocean Cruises
Founded 1997 · Adults-only, destination-focused small-ship cruising with Scandinavian design
Viking was founded in 1997 by Torstein Hagen, starting with river cruises, and launched its ocean line in 2015 with Viking Star. Its ocean ships are deliberately small — around 930 to 998 guests — so they can dock in smaller ports, and they follow a single design with all-veranda staterooms, a Nordic Spa, an Infinity Pool and a Scandinavian-influenced interior. Guests must be 18 or older, and there are no casinos or children's clubs.
The fleet currently has 12 ocean ships — Viking Star, Sea, Sky, Orion, Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Neptune, Saturn, Vela, Vesta and Mira — plus the expedition ships Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, which sail Antarctica, the Arctic and the Great Lakes. Viking Sun was transferred to China Merchants Viking Cruises in 2021 and is no longer in the Viking Ocean fleet. Viking Libra is due to join late 2026, with more ships planned through the end of the decade.
The fare is closer to all-inclusive than most lines: one shore excursion in every port, beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner, Wi-Fi, specialty coffee, tea and water, Nordic Spa access and all dining venues with no cover charges. Itineraries focus on the Mediterranean, Northern Europe and the British Isles, with longer voyages elsewhere.
