The Port of Galveston sits on Galveston Island, about 50 miles southeast of downtown Houston. It is the largest cruise port in Texas and one of the busiest on the Gulf of Mexico, and for much of the south-central United States it is the cruise port you can reach by car, with no need to fly. That is the main reason people choose it.

Sailings here are mostly Western Caribbean and Mexico routes. Because Galveston is on the northern side of the Gulf, expect at least a sea day in each direction to cross to the Yucatan coast, so itineraries feel a little more sea-heavy than the ones out of Florida. The sections below cover how to get there, where to park and where the ships go.

Getting to the Galveston cruise port

By car

Most guests drive. The port is reached from Houston by Interstate 45 over the causeway onto the island, and the drive from downtown Houston is typically around an hour in normal traffic. Allow extra on Friday afternoons and on holiday weekends, when the causeway backs up.

Flying into Houston

Houston Hobby (HOU) is the closer airport, roughly 45 minutes by car depending on traffic. George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is further, about an hour and a quarter. Cruise-line transfers, shuttles and ride-hailing all run between the airports and the terminals, so a rental car is unnecessary unless you are staying longer.

Arriving by ride-hail or shuttle

Ride-hailing works well from both airports, though drivers can be scarce at peak boarding times. Pre-booked airport shuttles and your cruise line's own transfer are the most predictable options if you are flying in on the day.

Terminals

Galveston has several cruise terminals on the Galveston Wharves, and each cruise line generally uses its own. Your boarding documents name your terminal, so check it before you leave, because the terminals are a short drive apart and the traffic into the port is one-way at busy times.

Parking

Parking is available at the terminals and in nearby lots, charged by the day. Prices change, and some lots offer pre-booking, which is usually worth doing for popular sailings. Our cruise port parking guide covers how off-site lots and shuttles compare with parking at the terminal.

What to do before you board

If you arrive the day before, these are the easy wins.

The Strand Historic District

A walkable area of Victorian buildings, shops, restaurants and bars a short drive from the terminals.

Pleasure Pier

An amusement pier built out over the Gulf, good for a family evening before you board.

Moody Gardens

A large attraction with a rainforest pyramid, an aquarium and a beach, popular with children.

Seawall Boulevard

The long seawall with the main island beaches along it, handy for a morning on the sand.

When to sail from Galveston

Sailings run year round. Winter can bring fog on the Houston Ship Channel, which sometimes delays departures or arrivals by hours, so avoid tight flight connections on the return day. Hurricane season runs June to November, and a storm can change or cancel a sailing.

Cruising from Galveston: questions

How far is Galveston from Houston airport?+

Houston Hobby is roughly 45 minutes from the cruise terminals by car, and George Bush Intercontinental is about an hour and a quarter. Both depend heavily on traffic, particularly on the Friday afternoons and holiday weekends when the island road is busiest.

Should I fly in the day before a Galveston cruise?+

For a flight of any distance, yes. Fog on the ship channel, weather and airline delays can all disrupt a same-day arrival, and a missed ship is expensive. A hotel in Galveston or Houston the night before removes most of the risk.

Which Galveston cruise terminal do I need?+

It depends on your cruise line and sometimes the ship, and it can change by season. Your boarding documents name the terminal. Confirm it before you set off, since the terminals are separate and the nearby roads can be congested on boarding days.

Is Galveston a good first-cruise port?+

Yes, if you live within driving distance. You can bring your own car, avoid flights and luggage fees, and start with a 4 to 5-night Mexico sailing. If you would have to fly in, compare the Florida ports, which have more choice of ships and routes.
