A Baltic cruise strings together a set of capital cities, each a short walk or tram ride from the ship. Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn are all compact, so you can see a great deal in the hours you have, and the ship is your hotel between them.
One thing to know before you choose a route is that Western cruise lines have not called at St. Petersburg since 2022. Itineraries that once centred on it have been rebuilt around extra time in the other Baltic capitals, so older guides and brochures may describe routes that no longer run.
When to sail
- Best months
- June to August, with long days and the warmest weather. In midsummer the sun barely sets.
- Shoulder season
- May and September. Cooler, quieter and good value, with shorter days in September.
- When to think twice
- Outside May to September there are very few Baltic sailings, and daylight is short.
When to book for 2027
The Baltic season is short and midsummer sailings are the most popular, so book those early. Because the ports are close together, you can often find a good route in the shoulder months at a lower fare.
Check prices and dates with your cruise line or travel agent. We do not quote fares because they change daily.

Northern Europe cruise questions
Do cruises still go to St. Petersburg?+
Western cruise lines have not called there since 2022, and routes that once included it have been rebuilt around the other Baltic capitals, often with extra time in Stockholm, Helsinki or Tallinn.
What is the best month for a Baltic cruise?+
June to August for the warmest weather and the longest days. May and September are quieter and cheaper, with cooler weather.
Is a Baltic cruise good for first-time cruisers?+
Yes. The ports are close together, the seas are generally calm because the Baltic is sheltered, and you wake up in a new capital each day with very little time at sea.
