Mediterranean Cruises 2027

The widest choice of ports of any cruise region, so route matters more than ship.

The Mediterranean is the opposite of the Caribbean: the ship is the means, the ports are the product. A single week can cover three countries, and you can wake up beside a Roman harbour, a Greek island or a medieval walled town. That makes your choice of itinerary the most important decision, and it is worth thinking about which ports you want before you think about which ship.

It also changes the way you plan the days. Ports here are cities, with their own opening hours, queues and heat, so a little planning goes a long way. The sections below cover the three main route families, when to go, and where you will probably start from.

When to sail

Best months
May, June, September and October, when the weather is warm, the crowds are smaller and the sites are comfortable to walk.
Shoulder season
April and early November. Cooler and quieter, with some seasonal attractions closed and some ships on reduced schedules.
When to think twice
July and August are hot, crowded and the most expensive. If those are your only dates, plan the hottest sightseeing for early morning.

When to book for 2027

Peak-summer sailings sell out earliest, and the most popular embarkation ports have the widest choice of ships well ahead of time. Shoulder months are the ones where flexibility pays off. If you want to add a hotel stay before or after, book it with your cruise, since ports like Barcelona and Venice fill up in season.

Check prices and dates with your cruise line or travel agent. We do not quote fares because they change daily.

Where Mediterranean cruises sail from

The homeport you choose often matters as much as the ship.

Barcelona

The busiest Mediterranean homeport, with easy air links and the widest choice of western routes.

Civitavecchia (Rome)

The gateway to Rome, about an hour and a half from the city, with Italy and Greece sailings.

Venice and Trieste

Adriatic departures. Large ships no longer pass through central Venice, so many itineraries now use other terminals.

Piraeus (Athens)

The start of many Greek Islands sailings.

Genoa, Marseille and Naples

Useful alternatives with their own good routes.

How Mediterranean cruises are shaped

The main route styles, and who each one suits.

Mediterranean cruise questions

What is the best month for a Mediterranean cruise?+

May, June, September and October for most people. July and August are hotter and busier, and April and November are quieter but cooler and can have limited opening hours at some sites.

Which Mediterranean route should I choose?+

Pick the ports first. The Western Mediterranean is best for cities and food, the Eastern routes for islands and ancient sites, and the Adriatic for old walled towns. If you have the time, a longer route combining them avoids having to choose.

Do I need to book Mediterranean shore excursions?+

For the biggest single-day sites, like Rome from Civitavecchia or Pompeii from Naples, a ship excursion removes the risk of missing the ship. In most other ports you can explore independently for less, so read the port guide for the specifics.

Is it better to cruise from Barcelona or Rome?+

Barcelona has the wider choice of western routes and an easy, compact city to stay in. Civitavecchia is the right choice if you want Rome included. The best choice is the one whose itinerary has the ports you want.
